Pehlay Akshar Product Design

Colour has the power to transcend all boundaries of religion, literacy, gender and age.

Pehlay Akshar, is a non profit organisation under the aegis of RPG Foundation that aims to transform lives through education.

Brief

I was commissioned to conduct a fun art workshop for the children of Pehlay Akshar to allow the children to freely express their emotions through colours.

Subsequently the artworks were to be adapted into merchandise for corporate sale, in an attempt for the organisation to raise funds for themselves.

Armed with canvases, an array of mediums ranging from acrylics to inks, and a series of unconventional tools like sponges, ink rollers, pieces of paper, and wooden stamps, each student was encouraged to let loose. Various genres of music were played to stimulate responses in the children. They tapped into their emotions to build patterns and textures according to how the music made them feel.

The little creative geniuses had done their work and it was time for me to do mine. The free-spirited artworks were given a professional edge. They were curated, cropped, digitally transformed into stylish print collections, then adapted into origami sets, table mats and coasters.

In a collaboration with Freedom Tree, the latter translated some of the artworks into beautiful linens and dining accessories. Renowned space designer, Elsie Nanji, was instrumental in this partnership and in bringing these thoughtfully curated products to life.
